How to Convert an Hourly Wage to a Yearly Salary
Comparing an hourly job with a salaried offer is easier when both are shown as yearly pay. Here is the simple way to convert.
The quick formula
Yearly pay = hourly wage × hours per week × weeks per year. For a full-time job that is hourly wage × 40 × 52, which is hourly wage × 2,080.
Common examples
- $15 an hour is $31,200 a year
- $20 an hour is $41,600 a year
- $25 an hour is $52,000 a year
- $30 an hour is $62,400 a year
- $50 an hour is $104,000 a year
These figures assume 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, before taxes.
Monthly, biweekly and weekly pay
Once you have the yearly number, divide by 12 for monthly pay, by 26 for biweekly pay and by 52 for weekly pay. A $52,000 salary is $4,333 a month, $2,000 every two weeks and $1,000 a week.
Adjust for unpaid time off
If you take two weeks of unpaid leave, you are paid for 50 weeks. At $25 an hour that is $25 × 40 × 50 = $50,000, not $52,000. Always use the weeks you are really paid for.
Converting salary to hourly
Go the other way by dividing the yearly salary by 2,080. A $60,000 salary is about $28.85 an hour. If you work more than 40 hours, divide by your real yearly hours to find your effective hourly rate.
What the numbers do not show
These are gross amounts. Taxes, health insurance and retirement contributions reduce your take-home pay. Salaried roles may include paid time off and benefits that an hourly job does not, so compare the whole package.
