What is BMI?
Body mass index (BMI) compares your weight to your height. It is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. Enter your weight in pounds and your height in feet and inches.
The formula
BMI = 703 × weight in pounds ÷ (height in inches)². Adults are usually grouped as underweight (below 18.5), healthy weight (18.5 to 24.9), overweight (25 to 29.9) and obese (30 and above).
Example
A person who is 5 ft 9 in tall (69 inches) and weighs 160 lb has a BMI of about 23.6, which is in the healthy range.
Tips
BMI does not measure body fat or muscle, so athletes and older adults may get misleading results. This calculator is for general information only and is not medical advice. Talk to a doctor about your health.
