How profit and loss is calculated
Profit is what you earn when you sell something for more than it cost you. Loss is what you lose when you sell it for less. Enter the cost price and selling price of one item and the quantity, and the calculator shows the total cost, total revenue, the profit or loss in dollars and the profit or loss as a percentage of cost.
The formula
Profit or loss = (selling price − cost price) × quantity. Profit or loss % = (selling price − cost price) ÷ cost price × 100. A positive result is a profit and a negative result is a loss.
Example
If you buy 10 items at $40 each and sell them at $55 each, your total cost is $400 and your revenue is $550. That is a profit of $150, or 37.5% of cost.
Tips
Remember to include shipping, fees and taxes in the cost price, otherwise your real profit will be lower than the result shown. This calculator gives an estimate only.
